This is the dramatic moment a historic bridge in northern Pakistan collapsed after a flood, leaving locals stranded.
The footage, filmed by local Pamir Times journalist Ijlal Hussain and shared with the newspaper's permission, shows the bridge giving way amidst a torrent of water on Saturday (May 7) in the village of Hassanabad, in the Gilgit-Baltistan region’s Hunza Valley.
Footage seen here from 43 secs shows gushing water in the moments before the bridge collapsed. Footage from 1min 42 shows a massive landslide take down trees and houses in Hassanabad village on the same day.
It’s thought that a heatwave in this glaciated region caused water to be released into the stream and surrounding areas.
With the collapse of the bridge, the 30,000-strong population of the Hunza district has been cut off. The floods also impacted on clean water supplies in the Hunza district. Five days after the collapse, the bridge has not yet been repaired.
"Pakistan has the highest number of glaciers outside the polar region and many are losing mass due to high global temperatures," Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Climate Change tweeted.

Climate change caused water to leak out of the Shashipar Glacier. 10,000 cusecs of water completely destroyed 6 houses in Hassanabad village. A bridge on the Karakoram Highway was also submerged and completely destroyed by the discharge of water from the glacier.
With the collapse of the bridge, the 30,000 population of Hunza district was cut off from the rest of the country. The floods also completely destroyed clean water lines in Hunza district. The provincial government and administration also visited the area but despite the passage of 5 days, the bridge has not been rebuilt, the road has been rehabilitated and clean water has not been restored. There has been a shortage of petroleum products and food items in Hunza district for the last five days
