Young boy takes care of twin sister and mother who lost legs in Kramatorsk train station airstrike
This young Ukrainian boy is taking care of his twin sister and mother who both lost limbs in an airstrike on Kramatorsk train station that killed at least 50.
Yaroslav is only 11 years old and is looking after his twin Yana, who lost both of her legs, and his mother Natalya, who lost one.
The family are originally from a village in the Donetsk region called Niu-York and are now staying at the children's hospital of St. Nicholas of the First Medical Association in Lviv in footage captured on May 12.
Yana is seen playing on her iPad while lying in bed, she recalls her horrific ordeal that happened on April 8: "Some strange sounds began as if something was whistling and flying. And then it suddenly darkened in my eyes, and that's it.
"And then I opened my eyes - my legs burned a lot, I didn’t know what was wrong with them. I wanted to get up, I cried, I was scared.
"And then I lift my legs and did not understand, I do not see where they were, they are not there.
"There was blood on them, there were no legs.
"And then I somehow found my mother with my eyes. Mum was also like half-sitting, reclining, and she also did not have one leg."
Yana's mother Natalya explained how she and her daughter left Yuroslav while they went to get some tea when the missile struck.
She describes opening her eyes to a "sea of blood" and casting eyes on her daughter with her legs "torn off".
"I opened my eyes - people are lying around like that. I started looking for this one right away.
"And then the military began to run, the police began to run. Yana was taken. Then they bandaged my legs and took me away," the mother recalls.
Yaroslav explains how he now helps his sister and mother: "I usually walk near the ward, if my mother or sister needs something, they just shout and I come running. They say what they need, and I serve them or call someone."
The family hope to go to the US for prosthetics and rehabilitation.
