Hundreds of baby turtles were released at Barane Beach, East Banggai District, Majene Regency, West Sulawesi Province, Indonesia, on Thursday 12 May 2022.

This is an effort to increase the turtle population which is currently threatened with extinction in Indonesia.

This is the activity of the Barane Community or Kobar Lestari when releasing baby turtles on Barane Beach.

In addition to involving adults, the release of baby turtles also involves children so that they can know from an early age about the importance of keeping turtle populations from becoming extinct.

Every year, this beach becomes a landing point for turtles to lay their eggs. To anticipate predators and hunters, the turtle eggs are collected and then moved to a safe place.

When they hatch, the baby turtles are then released into the sea.

The release of this baby turtle does not take long. When the baby turtles are removed from the basket, the baby turtles then walk towards the open sea.

Every year the Barane Community repeatedly releases full-fledged babies into the high seas in order to maintain its population.

In Majene Regency, turtles are hunted for consumption.

As a result of illegal hunting, this animal protected by the Indonesian government is threatened with extinction.

The Indonesian government also issued a rule that everyone is prohibited from hunting turtles. If found, the person will be penalized.
