A powerful tornado ripped through a neighborhood and damaged 90 houses in Indonesia.

The twister sparked panic among residents when it formed as dark rain clouds loomed over villages in Gunungkencana district on May 9.

It then tore through the roof of buildings and trees as frightened locals fled their homes.

Footage shows the whirlwind tearing homes as it carried debris from roofs along the way.

Disaster Management Agency officer Agus Reza Faisal said: ’There have been no casualties, but a lot of houses were damaged. Providing relief operations is still ongoing.’

Local officials estimated that at least 90 homes were damaged from the freak weather phenomenon, but no one was reported hurt in the incident.

Affected residents have been given assistance, while some whose houses were severely damaged stayed in temporary shelters while awaiting repairs.

Tornadoes are violently rotating air that can form from large thunderstorms or when warm air collides with cold air. This usually occurs during the changing of seasons in tropical countries from dry to wet seasons.

This weather phenomenon could be deadly as it could easily demolish structures and carry debris which are tossed about in the wind.
