Footage has emerged of a car driving through deep floodwater on a street in Budapest, Hungary.

In the footage, captured on Wednesday, motorists and cyclists can be seen to be struggling to navigate the wet conditions

“Hungary was hit by a huge storm on the 7th of July, 2015 after the so called omega-block weather conditions moved eastwardly towards Ukraine,” the filmer later wrote online.

“A day earlier Germany was hit by hail storms and very heavy winds and specialist was forecasting that lot ligher storms would hit Hungary. They were wrong. We saw the initial approach of the storm at a nearby lake. It was quite terrifying as heavy clods started to engulf us. Then wind picked up and gushes of 140 km/h were the signs of dramatic changes to be taken place.

“Very quickly returned to our car and drove back to Budapest. Before the location where the video was shot, traffic slowed down to nil as heavy rain flooded parts of low lying areas of Budapest where the highway ended and trams were under water and cars got stuck in foot deep water.

“Two pedestrians even hitched us to ask me to take them to nearest subway station so now four of us was watching the rivers of water on the roads. At one point when we got to Nepliget subway station, I kindly asked the passengers to leave so that I have highest clearance of the rear of the car to try to pas through deep water.

“I managed as you can see it on the video. However it was strange to hear the splashing of the water under the car. It sounded like we are in a washing machine on gently cycle.

“Then as I was progressing in the water pushing it very slowly with my bumpers, a rider showed up in orange shirt next to us. Thank heavens he was our guide as he could ride without risking of stalling in the deep water. Eventually we were climbing out of the water before reaching a tree that was twisted from the ground.”
