A tourist who took a selfie at the top of a waterfall slipped and plunged to her death.

Romanian holidaymaker Nane-Iosana Bodea, 23, was visiting the beauty spot with friends during a trip to the island of Koh Samui, southern Thailand, on May 14.

To cool off from the hot weather, the tourists decided to take a dip in a pond near the edge of the waterfall. Nane-Iosana, admiring the view, trekked to the top of the slippy rocks and posed for selfies with her smartphone.

However, the young woman screamed as she slipped on the wet , mossy surface and plunged around 50ft down the rocks to her death.

Nane-Iosana's friends rushed to where she fell and frantically tried to administer CPR to no avail, so they began screaming for help. A Thai tourist later passed by and called Samui Island police for help.

Paramedics arrived but it was too late and Nane-Iosana was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman's devastated friend Manuel Opancar, 22, from Austria said that he had walked to the top of the waterfall with her but it was 'steep and dangerous'.

He said: 'It was about 2 pm and Nane-Iosana lost control, she slipped and fell from a rock about 10 meters high. I saw that she was seriously injured and bleeding severely. I tried to help but I could see she was not moving. I shouted for help from other tourists.'

Volunteers used pieces of wood and cloth as a makeshift stretcher on which they placed the young woman, carrying her down the steep and treacherous path.

Nane-Iosana's body was taken to the hospital on the island for a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of her death.

Police Colonel Pongnatee Ubon from the Koh Samui police said: 'It took more than five hours before the body was successfully brought down.

'Investigators and doctors on duty at Koh Samui Hospital performed an autopsy. Initially, they found there was a torn wound on the head, next to the nose and the edge of the right eye. There were other wounds.

'The body of the deceased has to be taken for a thorough autopsy again for a summary of the exact cause of death.

'Investigators will coordinate with the Romanian embassy.in Thailand for further contact with relatives.'
