Breast cancer, also known as breast carcinoma, is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women worldwide.
Approximately 1 in 8 females develop breast cancer, and it is the leading cause of cancer related death in women.
Most early breast cancers are usually asymptomatic.
They are often first detected as an abnormality in a mammogram during screening programs before the initial symptoms appear.
Factors associated with a higher risk for development of breast cancer include the following.
Advanced age, which is the most significant risk factor for breast cancer.
Certain inherited genetic mutations.
Multiple first-degree relatives with breast cancer.
Family history of early-onset ovarian cancer.
And exposure to ionizing radiation at a younger age.
According to several studies, certain factors can reduce the risk of developing breast cancer.
Some of them include the following.
Breastfeeding.
Active lifestyle.
Prior risk reduction breast surgery.
Age less than 20 years at first pregnancy.
Low bone mineral density.
Use of tamoxifen, a drug indicated for the people at risk of developing breast cancer.
And being an Asian, Hispanic, or Pacific islander.
As already mentioned, early breast cancers may be completely asymptomatic.
If present, common signs and symptoms include the following.
Changes in breast size or shape. For example, asymmetrical breasts may be a sign of an underlying cancer.
Skin dimpling over the breast.
Recent nipple inversion.
Presence of a lump.
Changes in skin texture.
Spontaneous, bloody discharge from a single nipple.
Axillary lumps, which may be a sign of lymph node enlargement due to the spread of the cancer.
Orange peel appearance of the skin over the breast.
And dilated veins in the breast.
Pain and discomfort are typically not present in breast cancer.
And it is important to know that the presence of a lump does not necessarily indicate that it is a cancer.
However, some features may be helpful to determine whether it is a cancer or not.
If the lump has a hard consistency, irregular margins, and has fixed to the skin or muscle, it is more likely to be a cancer.
Those are the most common signs and symptoms of breast cancer.
The prognosis of breast cancer depends on how early it is being diagnosed.
Therefore, all the women should attend to routine screening programs, and avoid activities that increase the risk of developing breast cancer.
