Thailand's annual rocket festival wowed spectators in northeast Thailand as it was held for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic began.

Buddhist devotees from the region flocked to the Ban Donyao field in Nakhon Ratchasima province on May 15 to take part in the festivities, which included firing homemade PVC rockets straight into the sky.

Council chief Chaiyawat Lertsana said the event was held again this year as the Covid-19 situation has eased in the country.

Thailand's rocket festival is held during the second weekend of May every year. During the celebration, rockets are fired into the sky to pay homage to the rain god Phaya Thaen as they are believed to penetrate the clouds to welcome the rainy season.
