A herd of wild elephants blocked a road while waiting for a baby jumbo to cross in Thailand.

Footage shows the adult elephants standing on the black tarmac while a timid juvenile waited on the dirt roadside in Khao Yai national park on May 13.

The herd blocked the route and held traffic for at least 30 minutes before the drivers were able to pass through.

Driver Teerapol Kapol said: ‘We saw the elephants on the road and no one was allowed to pass. We gladly waited for them to leave and stopped our cars so they wouldn’t be scared of the vehicle sounds.’

Elephants are the national animal of Thailand. An estimated 2,000 elephants are living in the wild and a similar number in captivity.

In the wild, they roam through the deep jungle and in the country’s protected national parks but often encounter humans on roads and in villages.
