A 14-year-old schoolgirl in Thailand hanged herself after she was allegedly expelled for having financial and family problems.

Plokkwan Rasuso was found dead in her home in Songkhla province last Friday, May 13. Her friends told officers that the girl had been struggling to pay for schooling at Satri Phatthalung School in Phatthalung province as her mother was reportedly addicted to gambling.

Friends said she could also not afford the bus fare to travel to school and missed the first day of term.

Their teachers also allegedly asked Bonus to leave the school for 'being a problem for the teachers' because she missed the first day of school and had no guardians to watch over her in Phatthalung.

In text messages between the girl and her friends, police found Bonus venting and expressing her desire to take her own life.

The teacher involved, Chanya Chumek, head of the school's student care system, claimed she never pressured the girl and also offered options for her to continue schooling.

She said she suggested that Bonus either find a school closer to her home in Songkhla, or stay at Satri Phatthalung School by moving to a children's shelter in the province with a guardian's consent. However, she later found out that Bonus had already committed suicide.

School administrators and teachers attended the student's funeral and also donated welfare money to her family.

Malee Kaewlaiad, director of the school, said the tragic incident may have stemmed from a misunderstanding, adding that no teacher would wish ill on their students.

The official said: 'The school regrets the incident, but we maintain that the student care system at the school is doing its best.'

She added that students are not pressured to pay tuition, and they can also apply for payment exemptions or reductions every semester.

Bonus's family declined to give a statement, and only said they were in shock and sorrow over her death.

A fact-finding committee has been formed to investigate the matter further.
