Giant spinning rocket blasts into sky during Thai Buddhist festival
Elon Musk eat your heart out.
Villagers sent this incredible homemade spinning rocket soaring into the sky at a Buddhist festival. And they didn't need a 100 billion dollar company to do it.
Footage shows locals holding burning poles which they used to ignite the disc-shaped rocket’s wick in Kalasin province, Thailand on May 22.
A massive cloud of smoke covered the spinning launching pad with the rocket before the rotating projectile was seen shooting up the sky.
Thousands of locals and tourists turned up at the open field to watch the rocket launch, which was the highlight of the annual Thai Rocket Festival. The rockets launched vary in shapes and sizes, with the biggest one weighing 2,000kg called ‘Ten Million Fireworks.’
Local official Sawang Utharak said: ‘We are doing this event to ask for rain from the Gods. We know our prayers will be answered.’
The rocket festival, which was also celebrated in other Thai provinces, began as a Buddhist ceremony where it was customary to light up a dead monk’s cremation fire using a rocket.
As devotees put more effort into their homemade rockets, the tradition evolved into a festival, and later into a competition for enthusiasts to show off their creations that they have worked on for several months.
Devotees believe that firing the rockets into the sky is a way to pay homage to the rain god Phaya Thaen. They believe the rockets will penetrate the clouds to welcome in the annual rainy season.
Thailand's rocket festival is held during the second weekend of May every year. Council chief Chaiyawat Lertsana said this year's event was the first time in two years it had been held due to a break because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Controversial billionaire Elon Musk founded SpaceX in 2001. The company was this week reportedly pursuing fundraising to lift the firm's value to 127 billion USD.
In December 2019, Musk successfully defended a defamation case after branding British caver Vernon Unsworth 'pedo guy' during the rescue of trapped Thai schoolboys in Chiang Rai province.
