Injured elephants are given huge casts at this rehabilitation centre in Lampang, northern Thailand.

The government-owned Thai Elephant Conservation Center is home to elephants with fractured and deformed legs, blind elephants, and orphaned ones.

The TECC hospital in Lampang, northern Thailand treats sick and injured elephants from all over the country. It is government owned. Many of its patients arrive from distant provinces. The video shows a female badly injured with multiple fractures caused by a male in musth, which had killed its mahout. She is unable to stand. There are elephants with fractured and deformed legs, blind elephants and an orphaned calf which has found a surrogate mother.
Vets do their utmost but some animals will never recover and will remain at the centre.
There are an estimated 3,800 domestic elephants in Thailand, most involved in the tourism industry ,which is currently at a low level.
