The country of Georgia marked Independence Day with a solemn event in Freedom Square in Tbilisi on Thursday 26 May.

After demonstrations and speeches by the military, conscripts took the military oath and were sworn in as new recruits.

As well as the main event in the capital, similar events were held in five other regions.

Taking place this year in the shadow of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, this year's event was attended by the ambassadors of EU member states and the United States, which congratulated Georgia on its Independence Day.

For the first time at the event, the anthem of the European Union was performed. The Georgian national anthem was also be performed, by the Children's Chapel choir.

The event culminated in a flypast by five Su-25 planes and a number of helicopters.

As part of the Independence Day celebrations, defence armour and artillery is on show in 12 cities, for people to see it, talk to soldiers, take pictures and get information about the armed forces.

The event marks 104 years since Georgia proclaimed itself an independent, on 26 May 1918.

It has taken on particular significance this year with Ukraine suffering a full-on invasion by Russian forces that calls to mind Russia's capture of South Ossetia from Georgia in 2008.

Today, defense armor and artillery will be presented in 12 cities of Georgia, where the population will be able to come out and see, talk to soldiers, take pictures, get the necessary information. The main phase of the event will consist of Freedom Square, where recruits will be sworn in and join the Defense Forces. Also, armored vehicles and armaments will be presented here. The important culmination of the day is Georgian aviation, which has just been modernized. 5 Su-25s will be flown, as well as helicopters, which will have time for Georgia and the European Union. There will be smoke in the colors of the Georgian flag, aviation will fly west, from Kutaisi to Batumi and east to Telavi, Kakheti region.
