A protest against plans for campus police forces at Greek universities, ended in violent clashes on Thursday 26 May.

Riot police in and around Thessaloniki University's campus fired tear gas to disperse crowds throwing fireworks, stones and petrol bombs during a protest against government plans to introduce police to university campuses.

Thousands took part in the march through Thessaloniki on Thursday.

Later, shop windows were attacked, rubbish bins were set on fire, and missiles were thrown at police, who responded with tear gas.

Footage showed one hooded protester being arrested after he got trapped inside an archaeological site. At least eight people were detained.

Protesters are angry at government plans to introduce a new police body to guard university campuses, which critics say lack effective private security and suffer from political violence and petty crime.
