A reservoir overflowed and sent torrents of muddy water gushing through fields after heavy rain in Thailand.

Footage shows the murky water devastating properties and crops in Nakhon Ratchasima on May 28.

The massive volume of water was dumped into the area after only two hours of nonstop rain in Chokchai district, which quickly filled the dam which was more than 17ft-deep.

No one was reported hurt but farmers had to ferry 200 pigs from a nearby farm to save them from the deluge.

An officer from the Korat Hook 31 Rescue team said: ‘There were only cassava plantations and sugarcane fields that were damaged. The villagers were not reached by the water because they were quite far from the dam.’

Thailand and other countries in Southeast Asia such as Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines are in the middle of their tropical monsoon rainy season, which lasts until October or November.

Soaring temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius are often followed by powerful tropical storms with thunder, lightning, rain and flash floods.

Many of the under-developed nations struggle to cope with the heavy rain due to under-investment infrastructure.
