Peel Ports says record number of trucks are now using Sheerness in Kent, UK to get to Calais, France, bypassing the Port of Dover, which often suffers from traffic-related delays and high demand at peak times.

DFDS operate the route using ferry Botnia Seaways, which carried close to 4,000 unaccompanied trailers across the channel in May.

As the ferry is for unaccompanied freight only, it can help beat customs delays, driver shortages and limited storage facilities.

Footage of ship Botnia Seaways departing Sheerness loaded with trailers this morning (June 2).
