Local village man seen scaling the UK's tallest Maypole in West Yorkshire
A man in Leeds was seen climbing the UK's 2nd tallest Maypole today (June 2) during the Queens Jubilee celebrations. James Brown was cheered by crowds to freeclimb the 86ft (26m) structure and spin the Silver Fox on top as part of the village tradition. The event took place in Barwick-in-Elmet near Leeds as they held their Maypole Festival. The traditional event is held once every 3 years and was last celebrated back in 2017. The next event which should have taken place in 2020 had to be cancelled due to the Covid pandemic. The village Maypole was erected earlier in the day by crane, after being carried by a strong team of men & women from a nearby field where it had been restored.
