Osteoarthritis - Causes, Risk Factors, Signs & Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment & Prevention
Arthritis refers to the inflammation of joints.
Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis and is the most common cause of disability in the Western world in older adults.
This image shows the normal anatomy of a synovial joint.
Ends of each bone contain an articular cartilage which act as cushions in end bones and enables nearly frictionless joint motion.
Bony ends are covered with a membrane called the synovial membrane. And the cavity formed by the synovial membrane is filled with the synovial fluid.
Then the joint capsule encloses all the structures mentioned above and forms the synovial joint.
Osteoarthritis occurs due to damage to the articular cartilage.
Which is induced by a complex interaction of genetic, metabolic, biochemical, and biomechanical factors, leading to an inflammatory response affecting cartilage and other components of joints.
Eventually, if the cartilage wears down completely, bones will rub on one another.
