It is rare to find someone with an unwavering spirit and extreme courage but not in case of Parvaiz Ahmad Hajam, a young boy from Handwara who walks to school on one leg.
After losing his limb, the 14-year-old travels a long distance to reach school. He is currently in the 9th standard at Government Secondary School Nowgam in Kupwara district. He dreams of becoming a doctor.
Parvaiz lost his leg at the age of 2, when he suffered major burn injuries at his home.
According to the teachers of the school, he regularly takes part in school’s sports activities and plays volleyball and cricket.
He said, “I never considered myself a specially abled boy because I can walk and run on a single leg.” Although he adds that he does feel disableds when his friends run faster than him.
The 14-year-old hopes that the government will give attention to disabled people so that they too can achieve their dreams.
His father, Ghulam Ahmad, said, “I desire to provide every facility to my disabled son, but I am unable to fulfil his wishes because I am a labourer and my earnings are limited.”
He said there are scores of Government schemes for specially abled people, but those who deserve don’t receive the help.
He is not able to use the wheelchair provided by the government because of the bad condition of roads in his village.

A teacher at Parvaiz's school said, "His spirit is like that of normal children. He is brave and I haven’t seen him lose hope.”
