Squid eggs under attack by schooling bannerfish on coral reef in Cebu, Philippines

While scuba diving off the Northeast Coast of Cebu Island in the Philippines, I chanced upon this active school of Bannerfish (Heniochus diphreutes). As I got closer, I realized that the object of their attention was a giant gelatinous translucent tube, at least 6 feet long and nearly a foot wide. This was an egg mass of the Diamond-shaped squid (Thysanotheuthis rhombus), containing tens of thousands of eggs. The Bannerfish were engaged in a feeding frenzy, gorging themselves on the helpless squid embryos.

Thankfully, many embryos survived the brutal attack. Exactly two must hatch and attain adulthood to maintain the balance of nature.
