Rhinos curiously investigate a strange looking male rhino with half a horn before chasing him off

It was during a recent safari in the Kruger National Park that we came across one of the most fascinating sites involving a number of large rhino bulls. Finding one of Africa’s most threatened mammal species in the wild is always a special occasion. Seeing a number of rhinos interacting with each other in such a manner is priceless. We were lucky to find four large rhino bulls together and decided to observe them for a while. It was not long before we realised that things were a little tense among these rhinos and that one of the rhinos had only half a horn. The three rhino bulls, with all their horns intact, curiously investigated the strange looking bull with half a horn. It was clear that the three rhinos were ganging up against the one that looked different and we realised that discrimination can even exist among animals in the wild. The horn of a rhino serves as a tool for self-defence and without it they are very vulnerable. The curiosity of the three rhinos turned into intimidation that consisted of pushing and shoving. It was not long before the half-horned rhino realised that without his horn, he was no match for another rhino with a horn, never mind three of them. The rhino bull decided it was better to move off a little distance. The three rhino bulls kept following the fleeing rhino, nudging him with their horns every now and then. The rhino bull realised that he was not welcome around the other rhinos. With one bull still following in an intimidating manner, the different looking rhino eventually decided enough was enough and quickly moved off. This was one of the most interesting and fascinating rhino interactions we have ever encountered, learning more about their intriguing behaviour that is hardly ever seen.
