Rescuers in northeastern India hauled a baby elephant from a deep hole on June 7 and managed to reunite the terrified animal with the herd.

Officers from the forest department worked through the night with ropes and a mechanical digger to free the stricken pachyderm from the hole in the Nimati Range of West Bengal.

They then led the animal away and it was soon reunited with the herd that was waiting nearby.

An elephant calf was rescued by forest officials from a hole in eastern India's West Bengal.

The rescue was carried out for three hours in the early hours of June 7 at the Nimati Range in Alipurduar district.

Visuals showed the officials tying a rope around the calf, later, they held onto the rope as an excavator filled a water-filled hole with mud. The elephant was then pulled out and paraded, in an effort to reunite it with the herd.

Speaking to Newslions, a senior forest official said that a herd of elephant had strayed near the Nimati Range late Monday (June 6). However, around an hour later, staff heard noises and decided to carry out a check.

At 1:30 am, they found an elephant calf stuck inside a hole.

Soon, a rescue operation was initiated by a joint team from Nimati Range, West Poro Beat and Nimati Beat.

The rescue operation went on till 5:00 am.

Following the successful rescue, the young elephant was reunited with the rest of the herd, who were waiting nearby.
