3 British nationals sentenced to death by Russian-controlled Donetsk government
Three British nationals, Aiden Aslin, Shaun Pinner, and Saaudun Brahim, are accused of being mercenaries and have been sentenced to death on Wednesday (June 9) by the pro-Russian so-called Donetsk People's Republic in an internationally unrecognized trial.
The UK's Foreign Secretary Liz Truss condemned the sentencing and described it as a "sham judgement with absolutely no legitimacy".
The men's lawyer said they all wished to appeal the sentence, Russia's Tass news agency reports.
All three men were charged with being mercenaries, the violent seizure of power, and undergoing training to carry out terrorist activities, reports indicate.
Footage provided by Ukrainian media shows the men in a prison cell.
The men's families have insisted they are long-serving members of the Ukrainian military and not mercenaries.
