A kind-hearted Indian man went without his motorbike for months while sparrows nested inside.

The army man, Mr William, left his bike outside a garage in Omallur Salem district of Tamil Nadu, asking the mechanic there to repair it soon.

But when the mechanic started to look at the bike two days later he found twigs and sticks in the front basket and saw a sparrow flying nearby.

He realised a sparrow was trying to build a nest in the bike so left the bike untouched for a few more days.

The owner then returned and asked about the bike, angry that it was late.

The mechanic explained why he had not done the bike on time and the two men decided not to disturb the sparrow until it had laid its eggs and the hatchlings had flown away.

The mechanic also left some grains on the bike as a food for the sparrow.

Over the course of the next few months, the sparrow laid its eggs, they hatched and the baby birds developed feathers and wings large enough to fly away.

Once that had happened, the mechanic was able to repair the bike and return it to the patient owner.

Local villagers praised the mechanic and the bike's owner for their kindness.

Video was captured at various times during the hatchings' development and bike's repair, with the most recent scenes captured on Tuesday 7 June.
