Aussie scientist demonstrates that gas has mass using Coca-Cola and Mentos

This science teacher based in Terrigal, Australia, used Diet Coca-Cola and Mentos to demonstrate that gas has mass.

The experiment starts by Jacob Strickling tipping two Mentos into the beaker of fizzy drink that is set up on a weighing scale.

As the mints are tipped in, the drink instantly begins fizzing causing the weight on the scales to gradually decrease.

Strickling told Newsflare: "Carbon dioxide which is dissolved in the Coke, nucleates on the surface of the Mentos, causing it to come out of solution and turning into gas.

"This invisible carbon dioxide gas then flows out of the beaker and the weight shown on the scales slowly gets smaller and smaller.

"Eventually, once the Coke has gone flat the scales read 332.50 grams indicating that 0.5 grams of carbon dioxide has been lost to the atmosphere."
