Three rowing teams are attempting to circumnavigate Great Britain unassisted after setting off from Tower Bridge, London at 1pm local time today (June 12).

The leading rowing team was seen reaching the mouth of the Thames off Sheerness, Kent at sunset.

Footage shows the ocean going rowing vessel, dwarfed by the estuary and the hazard of passing shipping, which teams have to face as part of the challenge.

The event is billed by the organisers as 'The World's Toughest Rowing Race' and involves rowing over 2000 miles unassisted.
