This is the dramatic moment a suspected drug dealer was caught in a police chase in Phuket, Thailand.

The alleged contraband distributor named Yot, 26, had reportedly come from the island's notorious Thai Mai community - known for its drug dealer infestation - on June 3 afternoon. He was spotted riding a red Mazda vehicle by police on patrol.

Officers tried to apprehend Yot at an intersection, but he stepped on the pedal and tried to flee instead. Footage shows how he wove around traffic, dangerously overtaking other road users as the policemen gave chase.

Yot was finally caught after he was stuck in traffic, allowing officers to shoot his tyres and block his escape route.

The police combed through his car and found two methamphetamine pills. He has been brought to the police station, where he allegedly admitted to having taken drugs. He said he had driven to the area to purchase the illegal substances and was on his way home when he was confronted by officers for inspection.

He said: 'I accelerated the engine because I was afraid of being caught, but in the end, they got me anyway.'

Police have filed charges against Yot for possession of a category 1 narcotic drug, for testing positive for the said drug, and for driving without regard for others' safety. He is remanded in custody at the Chalong Police Station while awaiting further legal proceedings.

Phuket officials held a meeting on May 19 tackling the expected increase of illegal drugs as travel restrictions ease in Thailand. The working group said more cooperation between the government and law enforcement agencies is needed to intercept the drug delivery routes by land, water, and air.

Large amounts of the methamphetamine in Thailand come from Myanmar, where Chinese gangsters from neighbouring China, run labs before shipping the goods through Southeast Asia to Australia and Japan.
