Residents of a village in West Sumatra in Indonesia were shocked to discover a clouded leopard in their kitchen on June 13.

Footage captured in the Pasaman district showed crowds gathered outside the home of Afri Zal hoping to catch a glimpse of the rare big cat.

Zal watched the animal climb from a ditch and into the kitchen through the back door.

"I thought it was a Sumatran tiger. I closed the kitchen door so he wouldn't come out and attack the residents," Zal said.

Officers from the West Sumatra Conservation and Natural Resources Center (BKSDA West Sumatra) installed a trap in the home and after four hours safely removed the feline.

The clouded leopard was taken in for observation prior to release.

These cats are threatened by large–scale deforestation and commercial poaching for the wildlife trade.

Its body parts are offered for decoration and clothing

A clouded leopard shocked local Indonesians after the big cat entered the kitchen of a resident's house in Pasaman district, West Sumatra province.

Footage filmed in the Aia Manggih village on June 13, shows residents gathered at Afri Zal's house whose kitchen was entered by a clouded leopard.

Police and soldiers equipped with weapons are on standby around the location.

Afri Zal, the house owner, said that previously, the clouded leopard, which was initially mistaken for a Sumatran tiger, was seen staggering down the village road, then entered the ditch and climbed into the kitchen through the back door.

"I thought it was a Sumatran tiger. I closed the kitchen door so he wouldn't come out and attack the residents," Afri Zal added.

Officers from the West Sumatra Conservation and Natural Resources Center (BKSDA West Sumatra) went to the location to install a trap cage at the kitchen door.

Evacuation for 4 hours succeeded in bringing the clouded leopard into the trap cage.

Officers brought the clouded leopard to the Lubuksikaping KSDA office for observation.

"After arriving here, we observed it for a few days to find out why it entered a resident's house because this rarely happens. Is it habitat disturbed, sick or for other reasons," Head of Section 1 of the West Sumatra BKSDA, Khairi Ramadhan said.

After being observed and if the clouded leopard's condition is normal or fine, the officer will release the clouded leopard as soon as possible to the conservation area.
