This is the terrifying moment a surging waterfall overflowed into the streets following heavy rain in Indonesia.

The swollen Lembah Anai Waterfall dumped water onto the Padang-Bukittinggi Cross Road in West Sumatra province on June 13, causing floods that blocked the area off to traffic.

Footage shows how the water crashed down on the asphalt, forcing motorists to stop and wait for the surge to abate.

Inspector Lazuardi, head of the Padang Panjang Police Traffic Unit, said: 'The water discharge is very heavy. It is very dangerous if the traffic flow is not closed.

'We advise drivers to choose an alternative route.'

The temporary road closure reportedly triggered a traffic jam, but Lazuardi said vehicles can now pass through the road as the flood has slowly eased.

Indonesia and other countries in Southeast Asia such as Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand are in the middle of their tropical monsoon rainy season, which lasts until October or November.

Soaring temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius are often followed by powerful tropical storms with thunder, lightning, rain and flash floods.
