Fearless local stands on roofs to battle fire tearing through warehouse in Indonesia
A fearless local stood on rooftops to battle a raging fire tearing through a warehouse in Indonesia.
The man, known in his community as Uncle Ongket, was seen dousing the inferno with a low-pressure stream of water as the flames ripped through the building in East Kotawaringin Regency in Central Kalimantan Province on June 12.
Despite the billowing smoke and the size of the blaze, Uncle Ongket bizarrely appeared to be enjoying himself, hosing his body down before flashing a smile at terrified homeowners.
Below him, residents assisted emergency responders in unrolling the fire hose.
Onlooker Rachmat said: 'Before the firefighters arrived, the residents, including Uncle Ongket, tried to put out the fire using makeshift tools.
'I was standing about 500 metres from the flame, and it was very hot. I don't know how Uncle Ongket felt as he stood so close to it.'
The rash local was eventually told to come down from the rooftop once authorities had arrived.
It took firefighters about 21 hours to completely put out the fire, which gutted the 26x50-sqm warehouse and spread to a nearby housing unit. It was declared extinguished on Monday (June 13) afternoon.
Hawianan, head of the East Kotawaringin Regency Fire and Rescue Service, said his team had deployed 105 personnel and seven fire engines.
He said: 'The fire quickly grew and was difficult to extinguish because there were a lot of flammable items in the warehouse, such as plastic, hair oil, perfume, wood, and others.'
No casualties were reported, but the damages are estimated to be at a staggering 15,215,000,000 IDR (roughly 1,032,575 USD).
