Terrified villagers watched as a tornado destroyed dozens of homes in Indonesia.

The violent twister tore through at least 63 houses in the Maros Baru District of South Sulawesi on Thursday afternoon June 16. At least one person was injured from the debris being picked up and flung around.

Footage shows dark clouds blanketing the sky shortly before the tornado's funnel touched down and laid waste to the residential area.

Onlooker Hendra said: 'At first, it was just overcast clouds. Then, a vortex appeared and immediately damaged the houses.'

Muhammad Fadly, head of the Maros Regency Disaster Management Agency, said: 'The tornado hit earlier (Thursday) afternoon at around 16:30 WITA.

'The team is still assisting with the evacuation, clearing of fallen trees that hit people's homes, and preparing temporary shelter for the affected residents.'
