Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival returned this weekend after a two-year hiatus due to COVID.

The festival, in the southwest England county of Cornwall, started in 2003 with a mission to keep the history of the sea alive, and has since become the largest free maritime music festival in Europe, according to local media.

Sea shanty groups come together to perform on stages, in cafes, pubs, hotels, and community venues, with the aim of bringing the culture of maritime song to life and an attendance of 50,000 expected.

The entire town has scores of venues and outside stages featuring hundreds of performers who have travelled to the town for the event. Thousands of spectators filled the town. An unseasonal but perhaps apt Sea Squall swept the town scattering children and adults in the late afternoon. Virtually every pub and hotel featured traditional Shanty singing groups. although as the weather turned many public houses were forced to turn revellers away due to being filled to capacity. The proceeds are to help charity especially the Royal National Lifeboat Institute.
