Avian flu has devastated the world's largest gannet population on the famous Bass Rock in Scotland, seen here on June 21.

The UK's Department for Environment Food & Rural Affairs tested a sampling of the hundreds of dead birds found along the East Lothian coast.

Bass Rock, in the Firth of Forth, is normally home to 150,000 gannets, one of the largest sea birds found in the UK.

"We feel powerless. We can only watch and monitor the passage of the disease as it spreads through the colony," said Susan Davies of Scottish Seabird Centre, a charity that works to protect seabirds on Bass Rock.
