A TikTok doctor has revealed a bizarre incident from a night shift – sparking a confessional among fellow doctors online of their own horror stories from late evenings on the ward.

Kicking it all off in a viral video, Dr Benjamin Schmidt told his 454,000 followers (@docschmidt) of an unusual evening during his residency when a man came in complaining of back pain and pain when urinating.

The gastroenterologist asked the patient if he could perform a genital exam and what happened next left even the experienced doctor blushing.

“I was doing a genital exam, which is standard for men with painful urination since it’s more unusual for men to get urinary tract infections," Dr Schmidt told Needtoknow.online.

"And I noticed this odd black splotch in the middle of his penis.

“I wasn’t sure how to address it at first but then I just decided to ask him point blank.

"I asked him if he’s ever seen this black spot on his penis before.

“At first he looked concerned and said 'black spot?'.

"But then he leaned forward and looked at it and laughed a little bit and said 'oh no that’s just a tattoo of a scorpion that I got in Vietnam'.

“It was the quickest I’ve gone from concerned to relieved to a bit grossed out and unnerved."

Reacting to the clip online, fellow doctors and medical professional were quick to share their own war stories from the night shift – including a disturbing incident involving a corpse.

“I was in an anatomy lab when I noticed some black spots on the corpse's penis," wrote one doctor.

"I did not pay any more attention to it until I realised he was full of tattoos, so I went back to check my hypothesis; upon closer examination I was able to decipher the name 'John'.

"Up to this day I still want to know who John is.”

Another person shared their story of a similar genital tattoo find.

They wrote: “I had a patient who had a little rosebud tattoo that bloomed into a flower when he was experiencing more blood flow to the area.

"Perhaps you just didn’t get to see the whole thing.”

A different doctor also noticed a name on a man's penis, along with an "instruction".

They wrote: “The first one I ever saw was a woman’s name and an….instruction.  [Definitely] took me a second to fully process. [Just] about lost it.”

Someone else added:"I think a middle-of-the-night genital exam is one of those things medical students should be expecting in the future."

“After 20 years in medicine…Get used to this. Happens all the time!," wrote another medical professional.

Commenting on the original scorpion tattoo, someone else suggested: “Maybe looked more like a scorpion when the patient was standing at attention and saluting.”

As for the reason for the patient's pain, it is still unknown as the doctor finished his shift and handed over to someone else.

But the moment was definitely memorable.

Dr Schmidt added: “I was still waiting on the results of some of his tests before my shift ended so I’m not sure exactly what was the cause of his painful urination but I’m definitely sure it was not related to his scorpion penis tattoo.
