A three-year-old girl was rescued after her parents allegedly left her inside a water tank while they went to work.

The toddler was reportedly heard crying for help so concerned neighbours called the police to inspect in Valle de Chalco, Mexico, on June 18.

Heartbreaking footage shows the little girl sobbing while crawling out of the 5ft-tall tank's mouth while two cops tilted it down. She was reportedly telling police ‘Mom and Dad don't want me' during the rescue.

The girl's mother and stepfather were later arrested by the police for child abuse.

One of the officers said: ‘The girl's mother and stepfather arrived on a scooter while we were preparing to take her. We arrested them for mistreatment of minor.'

The girl's mother Maria Lucila claimed that they did not anyone to watch their child so they thought of ‘safekeeping' her inside the tank.

Mum-of-one Maria Lucila was taken to the police station together with her husband Javier but posted bail of 245 USD each so they were released later.

Officers took the girl to social services where she was checked for injuries but she was reportedly healthy and unhurt. She was kept under the care of social services during investigations.
