The laid back hippie and surfing vibe has long been a staple of Surf City AKA Newquay. However the iconic vans so beloved of many increase in profusion each passing year in the town. Also with an increasingly desperate lack of accommodation, many local workers displaced by Airbnb and other holiday letting landlords find van life is becoming the only option to remain and work the local hospitality industry. Locals against van dwellers point out the lack of facilities and damage to iconic locations, Those of a more live and let live bent have suggested the adoption of a more welcoming continental system such as French Aires which provide up to a 3 nights stop with basic amenities laid on at affordable rates. Vanners are welcome during the day at most council run locations but many areas are strictly posted with No vans during the night signage resulting in stiff no penalty notices. You might think this would solve the problem, but, and there is always a but, according to the local authorities many full time van lifers have no static address to send parking tickets !. This is an issue with a long future.
