Hundreds of homes were flooded after heavy rain battered parts of Myanmar.

Footage from Moe Nyin in Kachin state shows the overflow of the Nan Yin Chaung river that runs through the center of the town on June 20.

Nearby homes and streets were submerged by the muddy torrent. A resident said that around 200 houses were affected and people had to stay upstairs. Others had fled to different areas as electricity had been cut off.

Myanmar and other countries in Southeast Asia such as Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines are at the start of their tropical monsoon rainy season, which last until late November.

Soaring temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius are often followed by powerful tropical storms with thunder, lightning, rain and flash floods which cause rivers to flow faster and become dangerous.

Many of the under-developed nations struggle to cope with the heavy rain due to chronic under-investment infrastructure and high levels of corruption funnelling away public funds away from projects such as roads and drainage.
