A rare tornado battered homes in the Netherlands as terrified residents sheltered inside.

The violent winds were filmed blowing across trees in a local's backyard as the twister blitzed the southern city of Zierikzee on June 27. The tornado reportedly ripped off roofs from houses and wreaked havoc on properties in the area.

Emergency services officials said at least one person died, while 10 more were injured as authorities worked to assess the extent of the damage caused by the whirlwind.

The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute said tornadoes rarely form in the Netherlands, adding they are more likely to occur during the summer season.
