A fisherman went missing after being attacked by a crocodile in Indonesia.

The victim, Yon Ardi, 35, was a palm oil company worker who went fishing in the Rengit River in Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra province, on June 20 after coming home from work.

He was setting up his nets around the water when the ravenous beast pounced on him and dragged him under the surface.

Hoiri Nawawi, head of Pangkalan Balai village where the river is located, said: 'Eyewitnesses said the victim was attacked by a fairly large crocodile. His body was immediately dragged into the river.

'None of the residents dared to help. The crocodile was very vicious.'

Yusmono, head of the Nature Conservation Agency South Sumatra section, said warning boards had been installed around the river, which was a known crocodile habitat.

However, Yon, not being a local, was unaware of the terrain and dangers when he set out to fish there.

Search efforts continued until rescuers finally found his body on June 21 evening. Gruesome footage shows officers pulling what appeared to be a gray human leg from the water.

Arifin Nasution, head of the Talang Kelapa subdistrict, confirmed the recovery of Yon's corpse, saying: 'The victim was found dead and floating in the river.'

Yon's remains have been taken to a funeral home in Pangkalan Balai village.

In April 2021, another local was found dead from a croc attack in the same river.

Indonesia has a large population of estuarine crocodiles that flourish in the region's climate. They are the largest and most violent crocodile species in the world. Locals in the developing country still use rivers for bathing as well as fishing, which results in a high number of crocodile attacks.
