Dozens of Chinese tourists were arrested for baccarat at an illegal casino in Thailand.

Police found 52 people engrossed in the card games in the underground meeting room of office block 'Tower A' in the Huai Khwang district of Bangkok on June 25.

They conducted the operation at 2 am local time after receiving a tip from an informant about potential illegal gambling occurring in the high-rise.

Officers said they detained 22 Chinese nationals, 14 Burmese, two Malaysians, and 14 Thai natives

Suspected gambling equipment, including baccarat tables, was impounded as evidence, while about 4.3 million THB (123,000 USD) was seized.

Police Major General Jirasant Kaewsaeng-ek, Metropolitan Police Bureau deputy commissioner, said officers are investigating if local police had been negligent in probing the illegal casino's operations.

He added: 'The investigation will target those who were running the illegal casino as well as officials who were aware of it and allowed it to continue.'

Gambling is illegal in Thailand but underground venues can be found throughout the country, with local police often receiving bribes in order to allow them to operate.
