Thai air force scrambles jets as Myanmar military flies into neighbour's air space
Thailand scrambled two fighter jets after the Burmese military allegedly flew into the country's airspace on Thursday afternoon.
The Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) dispatched a pair of F-16 fighter aircraft following the suspected incursion by the foreign plane, believed to be a Burmese military MiG-29, in the skies over Tak province bordering Myanmar on June 30.
Terrified villagers in Ban Valley Tai and Ban Valley Nua close school classes and took cover after seeing the Burmese plane at shortly after noon local time. No shelling was reported.
RTAF spokesman Air Vice Marshal Prapas Sornchaidee said in a statement: 'An aircraft from an unknown side violated the border over Phop Phra district in Tak province while attacking ethnic armed groups along the border.'
He added the air force has told its attache at the Thai embassy in Myanmar to warn their Burmese counterparts not to repeat the alleged intrusion.
Fighting between anti-junta forces and the Burmese military is ongoing in Myanmar's Kayin state near Thailand. The latest clash sparking the air space incursion reportedly started on June 25 after militants launched an assault trying to take an army stronghold in the Myawaddy township. The army responded by bombarding the rebels with airstrikes.
Myanmar, also known as Burma, has been in turmoil following the outsing, kidnap and imprisonment of democratically-elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi in a brutal military coup in February 2021.
