The City of Canterbury in Kent held its 7th annual Medieval Pageant this morning (July 2) to celebrate the role of pilgrimage in making Canterbury a thriving medieval city.

A colourful parade featuring historic characters including knights on horses and three large figure-heads proceeded from Westgate Towers to the city center.

Canterbury Cathedral became a major pilgrimage destination following the murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket in 1170, to become the third most important site of Christian pilgrimage in the world after Jerusalem and Rome.

The pageant organised by Canterbury BID (Business Improvement District) aims to attract visitors by promoting the city's history.
