Rescue teams recovered the bodies of those killed in a landslide that left 42 dead and 20 missing in Noney, Manipur.

The site of the landslide was part of a railway being constructed to connect Jiribam district in Manipur with state capital Imphal.

A company of the 107 Territorial Army were protecting the construction site when the landslide occurred.

Massive Rescue Operation Continues For the 5th consecutive day in Noney district in Manipur in search of the missing person in the worst ever landslide. The death toll has risen to 42 with the recovery of 13 more bodies on Saturday, of which most (23) are from the Indian Territorial Army.

Over 620 personnel, 32 excavators, five JCBs, and a rescue dog squad were deployed on Saturday to search for the missing persons in Manipur’s “worst-ever” landslide that “brought down around 2km of the hill affecting an area of 700m on the ground” early Thursday.

Of the 80 people who were present at the affected site when the landslide took place, 43 were from the territorial army of whom 13 were rescued on Thursday. Efforts have been intensified by the Indian Army, Assam Rifles, Territorial Army, and the central and state disaster forces, to rescue those still stuck beneath the debris.
