An unknown person shot an arrow at a stray dog near Khordha in eastern India on May 29.

The sharp iron-tipped arrow pierced the right forelimb of the poor animal and came out from the other side.

The terrified two-year-old male lived in excruciating pain for three days. Though volunteers of Animal Welfare Trust Ekamra tried to catch it, the terrified animal fled from them for three days.

On July 2, the dog, which was in extreme pain, tried to find shelter at a house and the volunteers managed to catch it.

They took it to a veterinarian Dr Debashis Das where an x-ray revealed that the arrow had pierced through the flesh in the thigh. He pulled out the arrow and put the dog on antibiotics.

The dog is currently recuperating at an animal shelter run by Purabi Patra, who heads the Animal Welfare Trust. Though the stray is still traumatized, it is expected to recover well.

Purabi said: "I have lodged a formal complaint with the police against the miscreants who shot at the dog. Besides showing animal cruelty, the miscreants have also violated the Arms Act and will face a serious charge."
