A painter created a protest art work opposite the Chinese embassy in London, on the 13th anniversary of deadly race-rioting in Ürümqi, Xinjiang resulting in 197 deaths, marking a turning point in the autonomous region (July 5).

The haunting painting created in just over three hours on an enormous canvas captures the post-2009 plight of the Uyghur people; with CCTV cameras, spray-painted blood, a bulldozer, barbed-wire and a silencing hand placed over a person's mouth, as authorities created a surveillance state

Shams, who is a self-taught London-based artist, wanted to show solidarity with Uyghurs, an ethnic minority in western China, as estimated 1.8m have been held or passed through "re-education camps", with reports of mistreatment including rape and torture, others have been disappeared by authorities, endured enforced sterilisation and denied freedom to practice their religion.
