Motorists found themselves enveloped in gas today (July 6) while making their way down a highway on the outskirts of the Indonesian capital.

Unable to see in the low-lying misty conditions, many drivers were forced to stop in the middle of the road.

Local police arrived on the scene and confirmed that the gas was carbon dioxide which was used to fill fire extinguishers.

Police said the CO2 had leaked due to an error at a nearby gas distribution company.

A number of vehicle drivers looked panicked and stopped so that the traffic flow around the location was jammed.

After being confirmed, the Karawaci police chief confirmed the incident. The police said the white gas was carbon dioxide (CO2) a light fire extinguisher that leaked due to the negligence of an employee at one of the gas distribution companies around the scene.
