Thai villagers held a fancy wedding for frogs before they were released into a swamp to mate.

Locals kept the frog couple in separate fishbowls as they proceeded with the Buddhist-style wedding ceremony in Chaiyaphum province on June 30.

They prepared food, performances, and hoards of play money bills as the creatures' dowry.

After the bizarre event, a giant marriage certificate was signed by organisers before the bride and the groom bullfrogs were released into the canal together with 19 pairs of bullfrog entourage.

Local official Sarong Malaikwan said: ‘The purpose of the event was to highlight the importance of animal conservation. It was also a great venue for the villagers to gather and have fun together.'

Aside from the frog wedding, locals held a parade while wearing their entry for the costume contest. There was an estimated 300 participants coming from different villages in the province.

After the contests, the frogs - namely Thao Suksom and his bride Nonsila - were married off and released into the water. The marriage certificate was signed by officials while asking villagers to vow to take care of the environment.

Aside from the frogs, some special animal guests were brought by organisers to the event such as turtles, seashells, fish, rabbits, birds, and eels.
