Burmese military launches airstrike anew as weeklong fighting continues in border outpost
The Burmese military launched a fresh barrage of airstrikes as fighting continued at a contested outpost in Myanmar.
Footage shows army fighter planes flying over the Oo ka Yit Hta camp in Myawaddy town bordering Thailand on July 4 shortly before multiple explosions are heard.
A spokesperson for the Cobra Brigade of the anti-junta Karen National Union said the area has been bombarded with more than a hundred times between June 27 and July 1, adding that Karen forces reportedly lost 13 members. The Burmese military has not yet released official casualty reports.
Skirmishes reportedly erupted on June 25 and have continued for more than a week as militants tried to wrest control of the stronghold from the junta. Terrified Burmese residents have fled to neighbouring villages in Thailand for shelter.
Both sides reportedly suffered casualties, but the exact number is still unclear.
Myanmar has been ravaged by protests, violent crackdowns and rebel uprisings following the ousting of democratically elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi in a military coup in February 2021. Nobel Peace Prize Laurette Aung San Suu Kyi was kidnapped and has been held in custody on 'politically motivated' charges.
