Six people died as a storm swept through a village in Myanmar near the border with Thailand.

Residents in Loi Tai Leng village in Shan State had been forewarned of the inclement weather but they were caught off guard by the fast-flowing currents rushing in from the mountains after heavy rain on July 10.

The Shan State Army located near the village said runoff caused flash floods that inundated the locals' homes, sweeping large boulders and logs down into low-lying areas.

Seven houses were reported damaged while six people - two men and four women - were killed. Two more villagers are still missing.

An elderly resident said: 'This incident is the most violent flood that I have ever seen since the Loi Tai Leng village was established.'

Myanmar and other countries in Southeast Asia such as Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand are in the middle of their tropical monsoon rainy season, which lasts until October or November.

Soaring temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius are often followed by powerful tropical storms with thunder, lightning, rain and flash floods.
