A violent protest broke out following the deaths of two Indian men who were shot near the Myanmar-India border.

Furious residents of Moreh town in India mobbed and set alight a Burmese military border outpost on July 6, demanding the return of the Indian nationals' bodies to their families.

The demonstration comes a day after the killing of P. Mohan, 28, and M. Iyanar, 32, both of Tamil ethnicity.

The pair had reportedly crossed the border from Moreh into Myanmar to attend a friend's birthday celebration in the Tamu Township of Sagaing region.

Local media, citing eyewitness accounts, said the men were then accosted by members of the junta-allied Pyu Saw Htee militia and subsequently executed with shots to the head.

However, military council spokesperson Gen Zaw Min Tun pinned the blame on the anti-army People's Defence Force (PDF), adding that the bodies of the Tamil men had been cremated since officials allegedly failed to find their families.

Meanwhile, the PDF's Tamu chapter has denied the claims and recriminated the Pyu Saw Htee group for the killings.
